About the Artist

Mickee is a self taught surrealist artist based in Melbourne, Australia. In 2016, he founded The Bitter Irony as an extension of his artistry and a central hub for his creative and philosophical explorations. Drawing early influence from tattoo culture and poetry, his foundation in digital manipulation and ink illustration has evolved into a meticulous process of classical grisaille underpaintings and luminous oil glazes. 

His work is deeply rooted in personal experiences with mental health, serving as a visual language to process complex psychological states. Drawing inspiration from psychology, philosophy, and nature, Mickee explores the liminal spaces where organic, biomechanical forms collide with rigid, unyielding geometry. 

A foundational motif throughout his work is the luminous void, a stark, deep black space that acts as a metaphor for the modern digital screen. It represents the quiet, hypnotic pull of constant connection and the isolating tension of the black mirror, inviting the viewer to step back from the noise of daily life and confront the stillness within. 

Through The Bitter Irony, Mickee challenges perceptions, creating imagery that oscillates between the dark and the beautiful. He operates on a core belief that anchors his entire practice: "Beauty can be discovered anywhere, even in the darkest of places. For light and darkness are in the eye of the beholder."
