In The Studio
My most recent studies have involved exploring the deepest corners of my mind and relaying common concepts, such as landscapes, as a kind of distinction between reality and our perception. Through my work, I'm inviting viewers into the liminal space between the tangible and the internal.
I am exploring the starkness of transition, both in a physiological and psychological sense. This is often rendered through a direct correlation: the landscape of the mind is as manipulated as the wind-swept hills of nature. The relationship between light and dark is emphasised for this is an eternal battle, both in nature and within ourselves.
While there is a lack of explicit human presence in these scenes, the areas seem profoundly familiar. This is a deliberate choice—by removing the figure, I hope to create a universal space for introspection, where the viewer can see their own inner world reflected. Symbols such as the memento mori of a skull, the piercing gaze of a solitary eye, or the unraveling of a familiar form all serve as guideposts on this journey. Each piece is a different stop along the way, a meditation on a particular thought or feeling, whether rendered in the granular detail of pencils or the seamless transitions of oil paint. - Mickee
